FitLit Kids is a child development organization that was founded with a focus on Fitness and Literacy. We take a holistic approach to create programs that recognize the links between a fit body and a fit mind. And with everything we do, we tap into a child’s most powerful tool – their imaginations !
Past generations of children spent a great deal of time outdoors, climbing, running, chasing, and even falling. But that’s not always the case today, and we, as a society, are feeling the effects – less active children tend to be more sedentary adults, which can lead to a host of health concerns.
Getting children to be more active is a wonderful way to develop not only the physical aspects of a child’s life, but also the emotion, social and cognitive. It’s simple - kids learn through play. And developing healthy habits early in children’s lives can help translate to lifelong benefits.
And we’ll share our secret to getting boys and girls active, regardless of their athletic abilities. We make it FUN – shhh, don’t tell anyone. We recognize that little athletes are always going to want to hit, kick, or chase a ball. But not all children are so inclined, so we create a low-pressure, fun environment with games that spur a child’s imagination - chasing dragons, catching butterflies, cooking pizza, and piloting spaceships.
At the same time, our structured games help children develop an array of life skills such as cooperation, respect, and good sportsmanship. And providing plenty of encouragement helps them build the self-confidence they need to tackle any endeavor!
And we take the same approach to literacy. Picture books are incredibly powerful tools of learning - combining the wonder of words with the beauty of illustrations. Utilizing “The Whole Book Approach” from the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, we treat picture books as interactive works of art, exploring them from front to back cover.
Instead of simply reading to the children, we read WITH them, allowing the stories and pictures to spark their imaginations to the endless possibilities. We believe that getting a child to love reading is a key that opens up a world of possibilities, as reading is the cornerstone for learning. So we select books, from the classics to modern day masterpieces, based on their creativity, underlying message, storylines, and style… always with an eye to using stories as stepping stones to education.
But turning pages and discussing characters and plots is only the beginning. We want reading to also be an ACTIVE adventure, so we get children up and moving, playing high-energy games tied to the books’ storylines and characters. And we even developed a Walk-And-Read approach, where we move and act out the story, page by page, helping bring the children into the tale the author is spinning.
